Power BI may be configured to use either HTML through a browser or Java through an installed applet. Java isn't typically installed on most devices and requires regular administrator intervention to maintain. Our best practice is to use Power BI with HTML.
When configured for Java without JRE installed, Power BI will show an error that says: Web Intelligence Applet cannot be loaded, please make sure you have installed a Java virtual machine.
This will indicate Power BI needs to be configured to use HTML.
To set Power BI to use HTML, go to Preferences > Web Intelligence and change the option to HTML under the View section as well as where it says This is also the interface launched from the Go To list or My Applications shortcut.
Once you're finished, select Save and close to keep the settings.
