Opening SPSS Data Files in the Virtual Lab Environment

For instructions on how to access Virtual Lab itself, see this article: Accessing Adler's Virtual Lab

Before you can open an SPSS data file, you must download it onto the Virtual Lab computer. We recommend one of two approaches:
  1. Use OneDrive to move or access files
  2. Download the data file from your Canvas class

Using OneDrive is recommended if you need to work with one file over the course of multiple days. This is because any changes you make will carry over to future Virtual Lab sessions. Otherwise, for one-time assignments, you can simply download the data file from your Canvas class.

Note: If you did not previously save the data file to your OneDrive, you will need to use method #2 above.
OneDrive syncs your Documents and Desktop from Virtual Lab, but you'll need to sign in first. Check that the blue cloud logo of OneDrive is present in the system tray on the bottom right of the taskbar. Click to open it. You'll be prompted to sign in automatically, after which you can access your OneDrive files.

When opening data files with SPSS, you have to select the file type (see first screenshot). These are usually .xlsx files, so choose "Excel Data (*.xls, *.xlsx, *.xlsm)" from the drop-down menu and proceed to locate your data file normally.
