How do I Configure an Assignment Using Turnitin?

As an instructor, you can enable Turnitin as part of a new Canvas assignment or it can be added to an existing assignment. Turnitin is enabled on a per-assignment basis in Canvas.

Create an assignment that allows online submissions

Create a new assignment or select an existing assignment's name to go to the assignment and choose Edit at the top right.

Note: You can also click on the menu for the assignment (three dots) on the right side and choose Edit followed by More Options.

Fill out the appropriate values for the assignment including points, assignment groups etc. In the Submission Type field, select Online from the dropdown and then check File Uploads to perform plagiarism checking on uploaded documents.

Note:

If your assignment was imported from a previous course that was created prior to Fall 2022, where the submission type was External Tool this will need to be changed to Online

Consider setting the number of Allowed Attempts to allow re-submissions.

Configure the assignment to use Turnitin

In the Plagiarism Review dropdown, select Turnitin Plagiarism Framework and set the settings you prefer.  Click Save at the bottom when you are done.

Access Similarity Reports

See Accessing the Similarity Report for instructions for accessing Turnitin Similarity Reports from SpeedGrader, as well as features that help you to differentiate between plagiarism and other kinds of matches, such as appropriately cited quotations.
