Encrypt Sensitive Information in Emails

Outlook provides various encryption options to help keep your messages secure. When sending sensitive information over email, please perform the following before clicking Send to ensure recipients authenticate to view and interact with your message.

In Outlook Desktop

In the New Email  or Reply form, under the Message tab, select the Sensitivity icon (it looks like a document with a stamp).

Select High - Encrypt (Sensecryption)

When encryption is enabled, you'll see the following message at the top of the email form:

In Outlook Online

Select New Email

In the New Email form, select Sensitivity.

Note: Encryption is not available in the Reply form in Outlook Online.

Select High - Encrypt (Sensecryption).

Reading an encrypted email

A message encrypted by Microsoft 365 Message Encryption is delivered to a recipient’s inbox just like any other email message. The recipient will see an alert about the item's restricted permissions in the Reading pane. And have the option to Read the message

After selecting Read the message, the recipient will be directed to sign in with their email provider. Only the account listed as the recipient of the email will be able to read the email after signing in. If they try to sign in with a different account, it will take them back to the sign-in page.

After opening the message, the recipient can view the message just like any other.
