Introduction
Adler Connect is built in SharePoint Online, which is a product in Office 365 that combines modular web pages with file storage. Access to edit pages has been delegated to the teams that need to manage the pages to allow those teams to update pages and content. IT can also assist with updating pages on Adler Connect.
Edit Mode
If you have access rights to edit a page, you will see extra buttons underneath the navigation menu at the top of the Adler Connect page. Select the Edit button in the upper right corner of the page to enter Edit mode.
NOTE: Please do not alter the footer at the bottom of the page, because it is designed to be consistent across all pages in Adler Connect.
Web Parts
SharePoint uses a modular approach to web design that allows you to drag-and-drop elements, called web parts, onto a page. The most common and versatile webpart in Adler Connect is text, which creates a text box for rich-text formatting (font styles, tables, lists, links, etc.). Text boxes can include images, too.
Layout
Most pages in Adler Connect have two columns: the first column takes up two thirds of the page for content, and the second column fills the remaining third with related links in a navigation menu. Some pages have one large column for full-page content, and a few pages have three equal columns. The layout of a page can be changed by selecting a section on a page and then selecting the properties.
Comments
Each page has a comments section at the bottom below the footer. Comments have been disabled on existing pages, but comments can be enabled if desired. When creating a new page, SharePoint turns on comments by default.
Saving, Publishing, and Versions
Edits to a page are not permanent until they are saved, and nobody can see the changes until the page is published again.
Saving or Discarding Changes
While a page is in Edit Mode, buttons for Save and close and Discard changes will appear beneath the navigation menu at the top of the page. If you want to keep changes that you make to page, select Save and close. If you plan to make multiple changes, saving between each change can save you time and effort in case you need to undo a change or the browser crashes.
If you want to undo a recent change, you can select Discard changes to revert the page to the last published version.
Publishing the Page
A page that has been edited and saved will be stored, but nobody can see the edited page until it is published. Select the Publish/Republish button (depending on whether the page is being created or edited) in the upper right corner of the pate to publish the page so that others can see it.
Versions
SharePoint automatically tracks versions whenever a page is edited. To restore a page to a previous version, follow the steps below:
- Select the Page details button underneath the navigation menu at the top of the page.
- A panel will appear at the right side of the window to display the page details. Scroll to the bottom of the panel and select Version history.
- The panel will display previous versions of the page. Select the ellipses button (...) next to a date to compare versions or to restore a specific version.
Document Libraries
Some pages in Adler Connect use a Document Library web part to embed a list of files into the page. Updating the list of files involves editing the Document Library directly instead of editing the page where the library is embedded. To update the document library, follow the steps below:
- Select the gear icon at the top right corner of the window to access the SharePoint settings menu and select Site contents.
- The Site Contents page displays the document libraries in the Adler Connect site. Select the document library from the list.
- To add files or folders to the Document Library, select the + Create or upload button in the upper right corner of the page. To change a file in the library, select the ellipses button (...) next to the file and then select the appropriate option.
Conclusion
Adler Connect uses a self-service approach to content management that allows each team to create and edit their own pages. If you need assistance with editing a page in Adler Connect, please contact the IT team at [email protected].
